Did you know that nationally, only 20% of girls engage in at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity—a rate that’s lower than boys'? And even more concerning, girls' participation in physical activity drops significantly from ages 10-17. What’s causing this drop-off, and how can we address it?

In this episode of WAIT. HOLD UP… WHAT?, we dive deep into the barriers that prevent many girls from staying active and how a simple solution could have a lasting impact. Some of the most significant challenges include lack of financial resources, the absence of role models, and concerns about body changes—especially around breast development and the need for a proper sports bra. These issues contribute to the growing gap in physical activity between girls and boys.

The simple intervention of providing girls with a proper sports bra, along with normalizing the changes that their bodies go through, can change the trajectory of their relationship with physical activity for life. That’s right—just a sports bra and a shift in mindset could help set a girl on a lifelong path of confidence, movement, and health.

To discuss this crucial topic, we are joined by Dr. Sarah Lesko, MD, MPH, Executive Director and Board President of Bras for Girls, a non-profit organization working to eliminate these barriers and change the narrative around girls’ participation in sports. Through their work, Bras for Girls aims to provide young girls with the resources and support they need to stay active, healthy, and confident in their bodies as they grow.

In our conversation with Dr. Lesko, we explore the importance of physical activity for girls, the role of sports bras in building confidence, and how to educate girls about the normal changes their bodies go through. Dr. Lesko shares insights on how even small interventions can have a huge impact on a girl’s self-esteem, physical health, and overall sense of belonging in sports.

The discussion also highlights how providing access to the right resources—like sports bras—and creating a supportive environment can help girls navigate their changing bodies without fear or shame. As Dr. Lesko emphasizes, this is about more than just physical health; it’s about empowering girls to feel confident in their bodies and to continue moving through life with strength and self-assurance.

With the right support, every girl can thrive, and it starts with normalizing body changes and providing the resources they need to stay active and confident.
