WE REALLY NEED THIS ACCOUNT, JUST PLAY ALONG: Confronting Workplace Misconduct

Want to listen to the podcast while you read? Click here to listen to episode five now.

Have you ever felt silenced in the workplace or your employer requested you go against ethics and morals? Years ago, in a “Required after-work” meeting with a client, a high-level executive had a little too much to drink and without saying a word, he reached over and grabbed my leg, hoisting my foot onto his lap. I attempted to jerk away, but he held my foot firmly in his hands, took off my shoe, and started to rub my feet. I protested and continued to try and free my foot. Others in the room looked on with a clear feeling of discomfort on their face, but nobody said anything or offered assistance. What he did next was so brazen and inappropriate, that I still cringe when I think of it.

In episode five, we tackle the uncomfortable and blatantly inappropriate situations that women all too often encounter in the workplace. These moments have been traditionally dismissed as 'part of the game,' but it's time to shift the narrative. We delve into strategies to prevent such scenarios from occurring in the first place and, more importantly, how to respond when faced with them. Our focus is on creating and nurturing a work environment where safety and respect are paramount.

From Dreams to Reality: Jennifer's Career Journey

Interestingly, Jennifer Sandifer’s childhood dream was to become a hairstylist, inspired by the glamorous world of Hollywood. However, life took her down a different path. With roots in the aviation industry, she transitioned into tech after being recruited by Cisco. This unexpected turn highlights a common theme: our early aspirations often evolve as we gain new experiences.

Finding Contentment Amidst Change

Jennifer emphasized the importance of recognizing and savoring contentment in life, particularly in a world that often encourages us to chase the next big thing. We discussed how, in our fast-paced society, we can overlook the peace that comes with simply being satisfied with where we are.

Navigating a Male-Dominated Industry

Jennifer candidly shared her experiences as a woman in the tech sector, which, like aviation, is largely male-dominated. She reflected on the challenges she faced early in her career, particularly during her time in aviation, where she often felt like a "unicorn" due to her gender and youth. Despite these challenges, she found mentorship and support from female colleagues, which made a significant difference in her journey.

The Pressure to Conform

As a young woman in a male-dominated field, Jennifer felt the pressure to conform to expectations, including taking golf lessons to bond with male colleagues. This led to discussions about how societal norms can influence our professional behaviors, especially for women.

The Impact of Early Experiences

Jennifer's upbringing played a crucial role in shaping her career aspirations. Raised by supportive parents who emphasized self-reliance, she learned the value of financial independence early on. This foundation inspired her to pursue a career, rather than settle into traditional roles.

Embracing Vulnerability in the Workplace

Throughout our conversation, we touched on the importance of vulnerability in professional settings. Jennifer's experiences traveling for work revealed the complexities of balancing professionalism with personal identity. She highlighted the shift in dynamics when she began attending networking events and conferences, where she faced unique challenges as a young woman.

Conclusion: A Journey of Growth

Our discussion with Jennifer Sandifer serves as a reminder that career paths are rarely linear. Embracing change, seeking support, and recognizing the value of vulnerability can pave the way for personal and professional growth. As we navigate our own journeys, it’s essential to celebrate the moments of contentment and connection that make our experiences worthwhile.
