In today's world, the art of self-promotion reigns supreme. Everyone appears to be an influencer. The days of quietly working hard in the background seem to be long gone, and for many, it might have been a myth to begin with. We've come across numerous studies and reports that highlight a gender imbalance in self-promotion, often suggesting that it's our responsibility to assert ourselves and fight for our place, only to face criticism when we do so. From crafting resumes to negotiating and seeking promotions, there seems to be a double standard on how we should promote ourselves and the level of assertiveness that's acceptable. What is often celebrated in men is met with skepticism when women do the same.
In episode two I sat down with Mia Marie Parisotto, storyteller, leader, and coach with over 30 years of experience in assisting industry professionals navigate the workplace and their professional journeys. Mia shares her love and passion for people, learning, teaching, and experiences surrounding confidence and comfort. With this, the impact of small transformative moments and sharing positive impacts people have had on one another. Over a decade ago, Dawne and Mia met through an Oakley Event for Women in Optical.
At the heart of this conversation are demographics and branding as individuals and how this is seen through the eyes of others. Being a first-generation child of Filipino immigrants and being raised in predominantly Italian and Irish neighborhoods in Chicago, Mia faced a lot of pressure to conform and assimilate. Mia heard slurs from those who were supposed to be in charge of educating and shaping future generations as well as those who looked different. While not justified at all, these stereotypes can come from a lack of exposure and education which leads to assumptions. It is not unfamiliar for many of us to face discrimination or be stereotyped based on our heritage, careers, or even our family background. These damaging experiences can lead to wanting to be another race or wanting to be “yourself”. Instead, wanting to meet someone else's image or ideal–completely disregarding our uniqueness.
This episode not only discusses culture and how gender plays into that from a young age, but also discovers self-worth, identity, community, and how to find confidence within your personal brand amidst stereotypes and discrimination.
